I know that AI knows nothing

Socrates built his reputation on knowing that he knew nothing. Language models produce the opposite posture: total fluency, total confidence, and no idea whatsoever.

The most current philosophy joke in the catalog, and the most defensible. The full range here — tees, women's tees, sweatshirts and hoodies, all printed to order as you buy them. At least Socrates knew. The machine has not noticed.

Questions about this design

What does the I know that AI knows nothing design show?
Socrates, drawn as a gaunt, skull-faced sage in a red-trimmed robe, contemplating a red robot skull he holds in his hand, above the line I know that AI knows nothing. It turns the famous Socratic confession of ignorance around – the philosopher knew the limits of his knowledge, the machine speaks fluently without knowing any of its own.
Did Socrates really say „I know that I know nothing“?
Not in those words. The phrase is a later paraphrase of Plato's Apology (21d), where Socrates says of a supposedly wise man that neither of them knows anything fine and good, but the other man thinks he knows when he does not, whereas Socrates does not think he knows. The short Latin form „scio me nihil scire“ arose much later.
What is Socratic ignorance?
It is the awareness of one's own lack of knowledge, which Socrates treated as the beginning of wisdom. Unlike people who mistake opinion for knowledge, he did not claim to know what virtue, justice or courage are, and instead questioned others who thought they did. Recognising what you do not know is what keeps inquiry open.
Why did the Oracle of Delphi call Socrates the wisest man?
According to Plato's Apology, Socrates' friend Chaerephon asked the Oracle at Delphi whether anyone was wiser than Socrates, and the Pythia answered that no one was. Puzzled, Socrates questioned politicians, poets and craftsmen, and concluded that his wisdom consisted only in this – he did not think he knew what he did not know.
What is the Socratic method?
A way of examining ideas through questions and answers, called elenchus in Greek. Socrates asks someone to define a concept such as justice, then draws out consequences that contradict the definition, so the person has to refine or abandon it. The aim is not to win but to expose false certainty and get closer to the truth together.
Why did Socrates never write anything down?
We know his thought mainly through Plato and Xenophon. In Plato's Phaedrus, Socrates tells the myth of Theuth and Thamus – writing, the king warns, will weaken memory and give people the appearance of wisdom rather than wisdom itself, and a written text cannot answer when questioned. Many readers today see the same worry in AI tools.
Does AI actually understand what it says?
That is disputed. Large language models generate text by predicting likely words from patterns in vast training data, and they can sound confident while being wrong. Some philosophers and scientists argue this is mere imitation without understanding; others think some form of understanding may emerge. Socrates would probably start by asking what understanding means.
Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
In 399 BC an Athenian jury found Socrates guilty of impiety – not recognising the city's gods and introducing new divinities – and of corrupting the youth. He refused to flee and died by drinking hemlock. Plato's Apology, Crito and Phaedo describe the trial, his refusal to escape and his last day.
Is I know that AI knows nothing a good gift for philosophy teachers and students?
Yes – for philosophy and classics students, teachers who have marked one AI-written essay too many, and anyone who still prefers thinking for themselves. The design is available as a T-shirt, women's T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
