Darwin - Viva la Evolucion

The most reproduced revolutionary portrait in history, handed to the man who described a revolution that took four billion years and never held a rally.

Reads as protest art from a distance and as biology up close. The whole range here, from apparel through to accessories, all printed to order. A funny science gift for biologists. The revolution is ongoing. It is simply very patient.

Questions about this design

What does the Viva la Evolución design show?
Charles Darwin's bearded face in the high-contrast style of a classic revolutionary poster, complete with beret and red star, under the words Viva la Evolución. The joke – the most successful revolution in history took about four billion years, never held a rally and is still going.
What does “Viva la evolución” mean?
Spanish for “long live evolution”. It swaps one letter of the old revolutionary rallying cry “¡Viva la revolución!” and turns it into a toast to the slow, unplanned process that produced every living thing – Darwin's natural selection.
Did Darwin coin the phrase “survival of the fittest”?
No. Herbert Spencer coined it in his Principles of Biology (1864) after reading Darwin. At Alfred Russel Wallace's urging, Darwin adopted it as a synonym for natural selection in the fifth edition of On the Origin of Species (1869).
What does survival of the fittest actually mean?
Fittest means best adapted to a particular environment, not strongest or most aggressive. In biology, fitness is measured by reproductive success – the organisms whose traits suit their surroundings leave more offspring, so those traits spread. A slow, well-camouflaged moth can be fitter than a fast, conspicuous one.
Did Darwin say “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, but the most adaptable”?
No. The line appears nowhere in his writings. It traces back to a 1963 speech by the management professor Leon C. Megginson, who paraphrased Darwin; later retellings put it in Darwin's mouth. The Darwin Correspondence Project lists it as a misquotation.
What is natural selection?
The mechanism Darwin proposed for evolution. Individuals vary, many of those variations are inherited, and more are born than can survive. Those with traits better suited to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more, so over many generations populations change and new species can arise.
When was On the Origin of Species published?
On 24 November 1859 in London. Its full title is On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. A year earlier, in July 1858, Darwin's and Wallace's papers on natural selection had been read together at the Linnean Society.
Did Darwin say humans evolved from monkeys?
Not from any living monkey or ape. In The Descent of Man (1871) Darwin argued that humans and today's apes share common ancestors from the remote past – we are evolutionary cousins of chimpanzees, not their descendants.
Who was Charles Darwin?
An English naturalist (1809–1882). His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle (1831–1836), including the Galápagos Islands, led him to the theory of evolution by natural selection, which transformed biology and changed how philosophy thinks about human nature, design and purpose.
Is the Darwin Viva la Evolución design a good gift for biology teachers or science lovers?
Yes – it suits biology teachers and students, science nerds, sceptics and anyone who enjoys a revolution that runs on mutation rather than manifestos. It is available as a T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
