Hedonistic Climate Nihilist

You have read the projections, you have understood the timeline, and you are still going to have a nice evening. It is a coherent position, if a bleak one.

The most honest description of how a lot of people actually feel. The full range here — tees, sweatshirts, hoodies and mugs, all printed to order as you buy them. The forecast is dreadful. The cocktail is excellent.

Questions about this design

What does the Hedonistic Climate Nihilist design show?
A cruise ship ploughing through melting icebergs while flames rise behind it, under the words Hedonistic Climate Nihilist and the line “The world is ending but the bar is still open”. It captures a very current mood – knowing the forecast is dire and ordering another drink anyway.
What is nihilism?
The view that life, values or knowledge have no objective foundation – nothing is inherently meaningful, good or true. The term comes from Latin nihil, nothing, and was popularised by Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons (1862). Philosophers distinguish moral, existential and epistemological nihilism.
What is hedonism?
The view that pleasure is the highest good and the proper aim of life. Psychological hedonism claims we in fact always seek pleasure; ethical hedonism claims we ought to. Ancient versions range from the Cyrenaics, who prized intense bodily pleasure in the moment, to Epicurus, who prized calm.
Was Epicurus a hedonist who told people to party?
A hedonist, yes – a party animal, no. In his Letter to Menoeceus Epicurus says pleasure is the goal but explicitly not the pleasures of the profligate. He meant freedom from bodily pain (aponia) and from mental disturbance (ataraxia), reached through friendship, simple food and clear thinking.
Where does “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die” come from?
It blends two biblical passages. Ecclesiastes 8,15 recommends to eat, drink and be merry, while Isaiah 22,13 – quoted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15,32 – has “let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die”. In Isaiah it rebukes people who feast instead of facing disaster, which fits this design uncomfortably well.
What is climate doomism?
The belief that it is already too late to prevent catastrophic climate change, so action is pointless. Critics note that doomism, like denial, leads to inaction, and the IPCC stresses that every increment of warming avoided reduces risks – the outcome is not fixed but a matter of degrees.
Was Nietzsche a nihilist?
He is better described as nihilism's diagnostician. After proclaiming “God is dead” in The Gay Science (1882), Nietzsche warned that the collapse of traditional values would bring nihilism, and he sought to overcome it by creating new values and affirming life – the idea behind amor fati and the Übermensch.
What is the difference between nihilism and absurdism?
Nihilism concludes that because life has no inherent meaning, nothing matters. Absurdism, developed by Albert Camus in The Myth of Sisyphus (1942), accepts the lack of cosmic meaning but rejects despair and escape – we should live fully and lucidly in revolt against the absurd, which is why one must imagine Sisyphus happy.
Is the Hedonistic Climate Nihilist design meant seriously?
It is gallows humour, not a manifesto. It names a mood many people recognise – despair at the climate crisis mixed with the urge to enjoy life while it lasts – and invites the wearer to notice how odd that position is. Laughing at it is a good first step towards not ending up there.
Is this a good gift for someone with a dark sense of humour?
Yes – it suits philosophy students, climate-anxious friends who cope with jokes, fans of existentialism and anyone who has ever ordered dessert while reading the news. It is available as a T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
