Make Orwell Fiction Again - Dystopian Version

Orwell wrote a warning and we treated it as a roadmap. This version leans all the way into the aesthetic we were told to avoid.

Grittier, darker styling than the standard version — closer to the source's mood. The whole range here, from apparel through to accessories, all printed to order. A dystopian gift for Orwell readers. Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two make four.

Questions about this design

What does the Make Orwell Fiction Again Dystopian Version design show?
A huge red engraved eye hangs over a dark city skyline, as if the sky itself were watching, above the words Make Orwell Fiction Again. It is the grittier, darker take on our Orwell design – closer to the mood of Nineteen Eighty-Four, where the eye of Big Brother follows you from every poster and screen.
What does Make Orwell Fiction Again mean?
It is a wish that George Orwell's nightmare world goes back to being a novel. Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) described total surveillance, propaganda, rewritten history and language bent to make dissent unthinkable. The slogan says that too much of it now sounds like reporting, and that a warning should not be read as an instruction manual.
What is a dystopia?
An imagined society that is worse than ours – usually through oppression, surveillance or catastrophe – used to warn about tendencies in the present. The word means bad place. An early form, dustopia, appeared in 1747, and John Stuart Mill used dystopians in a Commons speech in 1868 as the opposite of utopians, a word Thomas More coined in 1516.
What does 2 + 2 = 5 mean in 1984?
Winston writes in his diary that freedom is the freedom to say two plus two make four; if that is granted, all else follows (Part One, chapter 7). Under torture the Party makes him accept that two plus two can be five if the Party says so. The formula stands for power over reality itself, not just over people.
What does Who controls the past controls the future mean?
It is a Party slogan in Nineteen Eighty-Four – who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting old newspapers so that the record always agrees with the Party. Whoever owns memory decides what seems possible.
What is Room 101 in 1984?
The torture chamber in the Ministry of Love that contains the worst thing in the world – different for each prisoner. For Winston it is rats, and the threat breaks him into betraying Julia. Orwell took the name from a meeting room at the BBC, where he worked as a talks producer from 1941 to 1943.
What is a telescreen in 1984?
A two-way television fixed in homes, offices and public places that broadcasts propaganda while watching and listening to everyone in front of it. Party members cannot switch theirs off. The red eye on this design is a reminder of that idea – you never know whether you are being observed, so you behave as if you always are.
Why is Orwell's novel called 1984?
Orwell finished it in 1948 on the Scottish island of Jura, and one popular theory says he simply swapped the last two digits. Early drafts, however, were set in 1980 and then 1982, so the theory is doubted. His working title was The Last Man in Europe; the publisher preferred Nineteen Eighty-Four, and it appeared on 8 June 1949.
Who is the Make Orwell Fiction Again Dystopian Version a good gift for?
For readers of Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, literature and politics students, privacy advocates, librarians and anyone who likes their protest with a book reference. The dystopian version comes as a T-shirt, women's T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
