Socrates about definitions

2 min read

Isn't it remarkable that there are so many diseases, but the definition of "health" is much more difficult? The WHO gives a definition from 1948: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."Health is therefore more than the sum of its missing components (infirmities).

The noun health in this context can be countable or uncountable. In more general, common contexts, the plural form is also health. However, in more specific contexts, the plural form may also be healths, e.g., in reference to different types of healths.

So we assume that there are as many states of health as there are people. After all, each person's degree of suffering is also individual. This is also used to make a diagnosis - unless there are acute conditions such as danger to self or others.

Hence, instead of struggling with definitions or, as shown in the meme, engaging in the Socrates-typical "Socrateasing", the focus should be entirely on the individual. The manuals are directional guides, not mathematical formulas to be applied to people.
