Being and Becoming - Framed Canvas
Description
Two pre-Socratics, one canvas, one unresolved argument.
Heraclitus never trusted stillness. Fire, river, war, everything that is, is only what it's doing right now. Step into the water twice and it's already a different river, a different you. On the left half of this painting, that restlessness runs through everything: the current, the ships, even the village clinging to the hillside, all caught mid-motion, none of it holding still long enough to be named.
Parmenides never trusted change. What is, is. What is not, cannot even be thought. Becoming, for him, is a trick the senses play, being itself is one, whole, and eternal, untouched by time. On the right, the same water that flowed a moment ago has hardened into crystal, faceted and fixed, folding into an infinite loop with no start and no end.
This piece is a reproduction of the original painting by Gabriele Lauschke (2026).
