Sigmund Freud - Deine Mutter

Every German schoolyard comeback starts with the same two words. Freud built an entire discipline on those two words and was handed a professorship for it.

Lands hardest for German speakers and still works wherever psychoanalysis is taught. Everything in one place, across every format we print it on, made to order. It is always the mother. It always was.

Questions about this design

What does the Sigmund Freud Deine Mutter design mean?
It shows a portrait of Sigmund Freud with the words Deine Mutter – German for your mother – set as if it were his quote, complete with signature. In German-speaking schoolyards Deine Mutter is the classic all-purpose comeback, so the joke reduces the whole of psychoanalysis, with its famous focus on the mother, to two words.
Did Freud really say Deine Mutter?
No, it is a joke, not a quote. Freud did write in German and did put the child’s relationship with its parents at the centre of psychoanalysis, which is exactly why the line fits him so well. His real phrases are longer – for example that the interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious, a line from The Interpretation of Dreams.
What is the Oedipus complex?
Freud’s theory that young children, roughly between three and five, develop desire for the parent of the opposite sex and rivalry with the same-sex parent, named after Sophocles’ Oedipus, who unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother. He sketched the idea in The Interpretation of Dreams (1899, dated 1900) and first used the term in a 1910 paper. Resolving it, he thought, shapes conscience and identity.
Did Freud blame everything on the mother?
Not quite. In Freud’s Oedipal drama the father plays at least as big a role as the mother. The strong focus on the mother came largely from later analysts such as Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott, who coined the good-enough mother. The cliché of the therapist asking about your mother owes more to popular culture than to Freud’s texts.
What is a Freudian slip?
A slip of the tongue, pen or memory that, according to Freud, reveals an unconscious wish or thought – saying one name while meaning another, or forgetting an appointment you secretly dread. He analysed such slips in The Psychopathology of Everyday Life (1901). Freud’s own term was Fehlleistung, translated into English as parapraxis.
What are the id, ego and superego?
The three parts of the psyche in Freud’s The Ego and the Id (1923). The id is the reservoir of drives seeking pleasure, the superego is the internalised voice of parents and society, and the ego mediates between them and reality. In German they are simply Es, Ich and Über-Ich – the it, the I and the over-I.
Is psychoanalysis scientific?
That is still debated. Karl Popper argued in Conjectures and Refutations (1963) that psychoanalysis is unfalsifiable, because it can explain any behaviour after the fact, and used it as his model of a pseudo-science. Defenders reply that some of its ideas, such as unconscious processes and defence mechanisms, have found support in later research.
Is this a good gift for psychology students or therapists?
Yes. It is a favourite of psychology and psychotherapy students, therapists with a sense of humour, German learners and anyone who still answers every question with Deine Mutter. The German wording makes it an in-joke for German speakers and a conversation starter everywhere else.
Which products are available with this design?
