Immanuel Kant - Sapere Aude

Dare to know. Kant borrowed it from Horace and made it the motto of enlightenment itself: the courage to use your own understanding without a guardian.

Two words carrying the whole argument of What Is Enlightenment? Everything in one place: tees, women's tees, sweatshirts and hoodies, made to order. Have the courage to use your own reason. Nobody else will lend you theirs.

Questions about this design

What does the Immanuel Kant – Sapere Aude design show?
An engraving-style profile portrait of Immanuel Kant in 18th-century coat and cravat, set against a weathered red-orange sun, above the words Sapere Aude in ornamental lettering. It pairs the philosopher of the Enlightenment with the two-word motto he gave it – a quiet reminder to think for yourself.
What does sapere aude mean?
Latin for dare to know, or dare to be wise. Kant made it the motto of the Enlightenment in his 1784 essay What Is Enlightenment? – have courage to use your own understanding. It is a call to stop relying on guardians, authorities and ready-made opinions and to reason for yourself.
Who first said sapere aude?
The Roman poet Horace, in his Epistles (Book 1, letter 2, around 20 BCE) – he who has begun is half done; dare to be wise. Horace meant practical wisdom in living well. Kant borrowed the phrase 1800 years later and turned it into the rallying cry of the Enlightenment.
What is Enlightenment according to Kant?
Kant’s famous definition opens his 1784 essay – Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-incurred immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one’s own understanding without the guidance of another; it is self-incurred when it stems not from lack of intelligence but from lack of resolve and courage. Laziness and cowardice, he says, keep people in tutelage.
Who was Immanuel Kant?
A German philosopher (1724–1804) who spent almost his whole life in Königsberg, East Prussia, now Kaliningrad. His Critique of Pure Reason (1781) transformed epistemology and metaphysics, and his moral philosophy grounded ethics in reason and human dignity. He is widely regarded as the central figure of modern philosophy.
What did Kant mean by dogmatic slumber?
In the Prolegomena (1783) Kant writes that remembering David Hume first interrupted his dogmatic slumber. Hume’s doubt about causation showed him that reason cannot simply assume its metaphysical claims. Kant’s answer was the critical philosophy – first examining what reason can know at all.
What is the thing in itself in Kant?
Kant distinguishes appearances (phenomena) – things as they appear to us through the forms of space and time and the categories of the understanding – from things in themselves (noumena), as they are independently of us. We can know only appearances; the thing in itself can be thought but never known. This is the core of his transcendental idealism.
What is Kant’s categorical imperative?
The supreme principle of morality in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785). Its best-known form – act only according to that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it become a universal law. Another – treat humanity, in yourself and others, always as an end and never merely as a means. Unlike a hypothetical imperative, it binds regardless of your goals.
Which Kant book should I read first?
Start with the short essay What Is Enlightenment? (1784), then the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785), his most accessible major work. The Prolegomena (1783) was written as an easier introduction to the Critique of Pure Reason (1781), which is best tackled with a good commentary.
Is the Sapere Aude design a good gift for philosophy students?
Yes – it suits philosophy and law students, teachers, scientists, freethinkers and anyone with a soft spot for the Enlightenment. It is a classic, understated design rather than a joke. Available as a unisex T-shirt, women’s T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
