Logos Pathos Ethos - Embroidered

Three Greek words in thread, in the order Aristotle put them. Understated enough for a lecture, precise enough for the people who teach it.

Stitched type that stays legible at small scale, which Greek rarely does. The full range here — tees, sweatshirts, hoodies and caps, all printed to order as you buy them. A rhetoric gift for debaters and teachers. Argue with all three. Win with any two.

Questions about this design

What does the Logos Pathos Ethos design show?
The three Greek words Logos, Pathos and Ethos stacked in angular lettering inspired by ancient Greek inscriptions. They are Aristotle’s three modes of persuasion – argument, emotion and character – so the design is a complete course in rhetoric in three words, and a quiet promise that the wearer knows how an argument is built.
What are ethos, pathos and logos?
The three means of persuasion Aristotle names in Book I of the Rhetoric. Ethos persuades through the speaker’s character and credibility, pathos through putting the audience into a certain frame of mind, and logos through the proof, or apparent proof, offered by the argument itself. Good persuasion usually combines all three.
Who came up with ethos, pathos and logos?
Aristotle, in his Rhetoric, written in the 4th century BC. He defined rhetoric as the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion and called these three the artistic proofs, because the speaker creates them rather than finding them ready-made like witnesses or documents.
What is ethos in rhetoric?
Persuasion through the character of the speaker – we believe people who come across as competent, honest and well-meaning. For Aristotle ethos must be built by the speech itself, not just borrowed from reputation, and he says character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion. A doctor explaining a treatment calmly and clearly is using ethos.
What is pathos in rhetoric?
Persuasion by moving the audience’s emotions – pity, anger, fear, hope or pride. Aristotle discusses the emotions in detail in Book II of the Rhetoric because, as he notes, we judge differently when we are pleased or pained. Pathos is legitimate when the feeling fits the facts and manipulative when it replaces them.
What does logos mean in Greek philosophy?
Logos means word, speech, account or reason. In rhetoric it is the appeal to argument and evidence. In philosophy it has a larger career – Heraclitus used it for the rational order behind the changing world, the Stoics for the reason that pervades the cosmos, and the Gospel of John opens with In the beginning was the Word, translating logos.
Is kairos the fourth appeal?
Many teachers add kairos, the opportune moment, as a fourth element – the right thing said at the right time to the right audience. The idea was important to the Sophists, especially Gorgias, and to Isocrates, but it is not one of Aristotle’s three artistic proofs, which is why the design sticks to the classic three.
What is an enthymeme?
Aristotle’s name for a rhetorical syllogism – an argument from what is usually true or widely accepted, often with a premise left unstated because the audience supplies it. He calls it the body of persuasion. Example – he can be trusted, he has never lied to us; the missing premise is that people who never lied can be trusted.
Is this a good gift for debaters, English teachers or law students?
Yes. It is a favourite of debate clubs and speech coaches, English, rhetoric and classics teachers, law and communication students, and anyone who has ever had to write a persuasive essay. It works as a classroom outfit and as a gentle reminder in every argument at home.
