Pink Freud - The Dark Side Of Your Mom

One of the great pun collisions: a prism, a spectrum, and the man who insisted every road leads back to your mother.

Records collectors and psychology students both claim it as theirs. The full range, in every format we make it in, all printed to order as you buy it. There is no dark side of the mother, really. As a matter of fact, it is all dark.

Questions about this design

What does the Pink Freud design show?
A portrait of Sigmund Freud glowing in hot pink, a beam of white light entering his head and leaving as a full rainbow spectrum, as if he were a prism. Below it reads Pink Freud – The Dark Side Of Your Mom. The founder of psychoanalysis becomes the lens that splits everything into its hidden colours.
What is the joke in Pink Freud – The Dark Side Of Your Mom?
It combines a pun on Freud's name with the oldest playground insult, the your-mom joke. That is fitting, because few thinkers put the mother so firmly at the centre of the psyche as Freud did. The dark side of your mom is exactly what a psychoanalyst would want to talk about in your next session.
What is the Oedipus complex?
Freud's theory that young children, around the ages of three to five, feel desire for the parent of the opposite sex and rivalry with the parent of the same sex, named after Oedipus, who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother in Sophocles' tragedy. Freud first sketched it in The Interpretation of Dreams (1899) and introduced the term Oedipus complex in 1910.
What are the id, ego and superego?
Freud's structural model of the mind, set out in The Ego and the Id (1923). The id is the unconscious source of drives that wants immediate satisfaction; the superego is the internalised voice of parents and society, our conscience and ideals; the ego mediates between the two and with reality. Much of all three works unconsciously.
Did Freud really say sometimes a cigar is just a cigar?
Probably not. Freud was a heavy cigar smoker, but the line does not appear in his writings, letters or reliable accounts by people who knew him, and it only surfaces in print decades after his death. It is best treated as a witty apocryphal remark about the limits of symbolic interpretation.
Who was Sigmund Freud?
An Austrian neurologist (1856–1939), born in Freiberg in Moravia, today Příbor in the Czech Republic, who founded psychoanalysis in Vienna. He introduced ideas like the dynamic unconscious, repression, dream interpretation and the talking cure. After the Nazi annexation of Austria he fled to London in 1938 and died there in September 1939.
Is psychoanalysis a science?
That is disputed. Karl Popper argued that psychoanalysis is not scientific because it can explain any behaviour and so no observation could ever refute it. Defenders reply that some psychoanalytic ideas have been tested and that therapy is an interpretive practice rather than a lab science. The debate is a classic case study in the philosophy of science.
Who is the Pink Freud design a good gift for?
For psychology and psychoanalysis students, therapists with a sense of humour, philosophy readers and anyone who has ever been told it is all about their mother. The design is available as a sweatshirt, premium hoodie, classic t-shirt, women's t-shirt, mug and sticker.
