Freudian Slip

Freud argued that the tongue betrays what the mind is suppressing. Every awkward thing you have said at work was, on this account, technically the truth.

The standard-bearer of psychoanalytic humor, done properly. Available across tees, women's tees, sweatshirts and hoodies, printed to order. You did not misspeak. You confessed.

Questions about this design

What does the Freudian Slip design show?
Sigmund Freud himself losing his footing on a banana peel, his cigar flying through the air – a Freudian slip in the most literal sense. The cartoon takes the famous term for a revealing verbal mistake and turns it back into plain slapstick, which is exactly the kind of double meaning Freud loved to analyse.
What is a Freudian slip?
A Freudian slip is a mistake in speech, writing, reading or memory that seems to reveal a wish or thought the speaker was trying to keep back – calling your partner by an ex’s name, for instance. Freud called such errors Fehlleistungen; his English translator James Strachey rendered the term as parapraxes.
Where does the term Freudian slip come from?
From Freud’s The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, first published as a journal article in 1901 and as a book in 1904. There he argued that slips of the tongue, forgotten names and mislaid objects are not random but compromises between a conscious intention and a repressed one.
What is a famous example of a Freudian slip?
One of Freud’s best-known examples – the President of the Austrian parliament’s lower house opened a session by announcing that a quorum was present and he therefore declared the sitting closed. Freud read it as a betrayal of what the President really wanted, namely for a session he expected to be stormy to be over before it began.
Are Freudian slips real?
The slips are real; the explanation is contested. Psycholinguists find that most speech errors follow mechanical patterns – similar sounds, swapped words, competing plans – rather than hidden desires. Some experiments, such as those by Michael Motley and colleagues around 1980, found that people primed with a theme make more slips related to it, which keeps a modest version of Freud’s idea alive.
Did Freud really say sometimes a cigar is just a cigar?
There is no evidence that he did. Researchers, including the Freud Museum and Quote Investigator, have found no source in his writings, lectures or letters; the line only surfaces in print long after his death in 1939. It persists because it fits too neatly – Freud was indeed a heavy cigar smoker.
What are the id, ego and superego?
Freud’s three-part model of the mind, set out in The Ego and the Id (1923). The id is the reservoir of drives and wishes, the superego is the internalised voice of conscience and ideals, and the ego mediates between them and reality. A Freudian slip, on this model, is the moment the ego’s guard briefly fails.
Is the Freudian Slip design a good gift for psychology students or therapists?
Yes – it suits psychology and psychoanalysis students, therapists, counsellors and anyone who has ever said exactly the wrong thing at work. The design comes as a Unisex Classic T-Shirt, Women’s T-Shirt, Sweatshirt, Premium Hoodie, Mug and Sticker.
