Other subjects promise answers. Philosophy promises to take the ones you arrived with and examine them until they stop looking reliable.

Questions about this design

What does the Philosophy – All your answers questioned design show?
The word Philosophy in bold yellow retro script with a pink shadow and a little sparkle. Beneath it the promise All your questions answered is crossed out and corrected in pink handwriting to all your answers questioned. It is the most honest job description the discipline has ever had.
What is philosophy?
From the Greek philosophia, love of wisdom. Philosophy is the systematic, reasoned examination of the most basic questions – what exists, what we can know, how we should live, what makes an argument valid. Unlike the sciences it works mainly with concepts and arguments rather than experiments.
What are the main branches of philosophy?
The four classic core areas are metaphysics (what is real), epistemology (what and how we can know), ethics (how we should act and live) and logic (what makes reasoning valid). Aesthetics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science and philosophy of language are major further fields.
What did Bertrand Russell say is the value of philosophy?
In the last chapter of The Problems of Philosophy (1912), Russell argues that philosophy should be studied not for definite answers, since few can be known to be true, but for the sake of the questions themselves. They widen our sense of what is possible, loosen dogmatic certainty and free us from the tyranny of custom.
Who said philosophy begins in wonder?
Plato, in the Theaetetus (155d), where Socrates says that wonder is the feeling of a philosopher and philosophy begins in wonder. Aristotle echoes it at the start of the Metaphysics – it is through wondering that people first began to philosophise, and still do.
What is the Socratic method?
Socrates' way of doing philosophy by questioning (elenchus). He asks someone to define a concept such as courage or justice, then draws out consequences until the definition contradicts itself. The conversation often ends in aporia, a productive puzzlement – the answers have been questioned, and the real thinking can begin.
Why study philosophy?
Because it trains skills that transfer everywhere – analysing arguments, spotting hidden assumptions, writing clearly and thinking about problems that have no easy answer. It also gives you a vocabulary for the questions everyone faces sooner or later, about meaning, knowledge, freedom and how to live.
Where should a beginner start reading philosophy?
Short, lively classics work best. Good first reads are Plato's Apology, Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) and Russell's The Problems of Philosophy (1912). For a modern overview, Thomas Nagel's What Does It All Mean? (1987) introduces the big questions in under a hundred pages.
Is the Philosophy – All your answers questioned design a good gift?
Yes, for philosophy students and teachers, freshly minted graduates, debate lovers and anyone who answers a question with a question. It comes as a unisex T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
