ROMO: Relief of missing out

FOMO gets all the attention. Nobody has properly documented the profound physical relief of learning that the thing has been called off.

Gives a word to something everybody has felt and nobody has labelled. The full range here — tees, sweatshirts, hoodies and mugs, all printed to order as you buy them. A funny introvert gift for introverts. They went out. You are delighted about it.

Questions about this design

What does the ROMO design show?
The word ROMO in bold, rounded retro lettering with a warm orange-and-yellow outline, and beneath it in small handwriting “relief of missing out”. It names the quiet joy of hearing that the plan has been cancelled and you can stay home after all.
What does ROMO mean?
ROMO stands for relief of missing out – the sense of relief when you skip, or are spared, an event, trip or social obligation and realise you did not want to go anyway. It is the mirror image of FOMO and has been discussed widely as a wellbeing trend since the early 2020s.
What is FOMO and where does the term come from?
FOMO, fear of missing out, is the anxious feeling that others are having rewarding experiences without you. The acronym was popularised by Patrick J. McGinnis in a 2004 article for The Harbus, the Harvard Business School student paper, and spread with social media.
What is the difference between ROMO and JOMO?
JOMO, the joy of missing out, is the deliberate choice to disconnect and enjoy your own time. ROMO is more spontaneous – the exhale when something is called off or you finally say no. JOMO is a practice, ROMO is the feeling that tells you that you needed it.
Did Pascal say all of humanity's problems come from not being able to sit quietly in a room?
Yes, roughly. In his Pensées, published posthumously in 1670, Blaise Pascal wrote that all the unhappiness of human beings comes from a single thing – that they cannot stay quietly in their own room. He argued that we chase distraction (divertissement) to avoid facing ourselves.
What did Epicurus mean by “live unnoticed”?
Lathe biosas, live unnoticed, was an Epicurean maxim advising a quiet life among friends, away from politics, fame and public competition, which bring anxiety rather than happiness. Plutarch later wrote a whole essay attacking it, which shows how provocative the idea was.
What does Seneca say about busyness in On the Shortness of Life?
In De Brevitate Vitae Seneca argues that life is not short but we waste much of it, chasing obligations, ambition and other people's agendas. Those who reclaim their time for reflection and philosophy, he says, are the only ones truly at leisure – and truly alive.
Is the ROMO design a good gift for introverts?
Yes – it suits introverts, homebodies, overbooked students and anyone who has ever cheered silently at a cancelled party. It is available as a T-shirt, sweatshirt, premium hoodie, mug and sticker.
